Having a digital space of my own where I can share my ideas, has always been on my mind.

Over the years I have use tools like,

  • Google Keep
  • Obsidain to jot down my thought.

And this note has always been shared with friends and family base on conversation.

In this article my goal is to share how I set up Hugo to help publish my ideas and thoughts.

Why Hugo

Before settling with Hugo, I consider some other alternatives like

  • Wordpress
  • Medium
  • Dev.to
  • Substack; and
  • Docurious

While they all are great alternative and are much easier to set, Hugo was more appealing to me, beacuse

  • I wanted total control of my content
  • I started using goLang - it just made sense to use a tool that was built with goLang
  • I like to get my hands dirty with goland template (It has been 2 months and I am yet to do that, work work work)
  • I assume that sometime in the future I will be writing about computer sceince stuff and Maths, I wanted to work with Latex or it direvatives.
  • Markdown is cool

Now you see that there no much big reason why I picked Hugo - it was just personal prefrence; So if you are like me that wants to share your knowledge by writing, i recommend that you checkout the other alternatives berfore going with Hugo. The alternatives are way mush faster to set up than Hugo.

If you have decided to go with Hugo despite my warnings, alright, fisrt thing you need to install Hugo; Hugo provides a good documentation for installation

Theme

You can not do much with Hugo without a theme, let me rephares - You can not do anything with Hugo without a theme. Picking a theme for Hugo is not a sport I recommend - Although I settled for PaperMod I tried out about 3 different them before settling for this.

Go through the Hugo Theme Exploral and make a pick, best luck with that.
